The bipolar forceps are used for dissection and coagulation. The tissue is coagulated between the tips of the bipolar forceps, thereby achieving haemostasis. With bipolar forceps, the current flows between the tips of the forceps and is therefore limited to this area. With monopolar forceps, the current flows from the forceps through the body to the neutral electrode. This is why bipolar forceps are safer to use than monopolar forceps.

The bipolar forceps are connected to an electrosurgical unit and used for coagulation. This achieves hemostasis. The tissue is specifically grasped with the two tips of the bipolar forceps and a current flows between them, thereby stopping the bleeding. In this application, no current flows through the body to the neutral electrode. In contrast to monopolar application, the bipolar technique is safer, gentler and requires less power.
